Industry Donation to NBCC Advances Skilled Trades in Province

MONCTON, NB - New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) proudly accepted the keys to a 2020 Western Star 4900SA transport truck at its Moncton campus on Thursday, November 4. The truck, donated by Daimler Trucks North America, will be incorporated into the school’s Truck and Transport Service Technician curriculum, and provide students with the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art machinery.

"Nothing is more relevant frankly than ensuring we have capable technicians who are able to diagnose and fix time sensitive equipment where uptime is crucial and valued," said Brad Thiessen, Vice President and General Manager, Daimler Trucks North America.

Universal Truck and Trailer (UTT), a leading dealer of two Daimler Truck brands, Freightliner and Western Star, has had a strong working relationship with NBCC and actively participated in helping make this donation a reality.

“As an employer of nearly 50 licensed mechanics and 19 apprentices, we see the need for more skilled workers in New Brunswick every day,” said Stephan Paillant, General Manager of Universal Truck and Trailer. “Supporting training and development, especially in a local capacity, is an investment in our future as well as the students’.”

“As we prepare our learners for the workplaces of tomorrow, it’s essential that we provide them with opportunities to learn using the latest technology and equipment that they’ll encounter on the job,” said Mary Butler, President and CEO of NBCC. “We simply couldn’t do it without the generous support of industry partners like Daimler and Universal.”

Students in the Truck and Transport Service Technician program are eager to get under the hood of the new Western Star.

“This is the future,” said Aaron Beaman. “This is really going to help out as we go into this trade. We’ll know what new stuff is out there and keep up to date with it.”

Classmate Kent Silverthorn agreed: “We have the opportunity now to work on something new to get us ready for a work environment.”
